Here is a boat for ya. A replica of the J boat Ranger, the original was the greatest J Boat ever built. This one was launched in 2004. She is steel and carbon fiber. Gorgeous. A serious wow factor. I saw her motoring into St Thomas yesterday during the same squall in which I was hove-to. I was sailing...just saying.

I saw this one while out for a sail yesterday--the 175-foot sailing yacht Anne (ex Erica XII). We first saw her from a distance and the tip of the mast was higher than the mountains on Isle Au Haut. What an impressive sight!

Not even close to a windjammer, but here's my neighbor's gaff-rigged day sailer. Supposedly, it's a replica of a cod fishing vessel from the Isles of Shoals. She's a pretty little boat.

So many lovely boats in New England. Great pictures by everyone. I hope to get up there sailing some day. Might be camping up there later in the summer. I'm taking our sails to the Doyle loft near New Rochelle...even a Southerner knows that is not in NE but it's geographically close. Might make the trip next week and perhaps we can push on a little further.

I was able to see the start of the Camden Classic Cup on Friday. There were so many beautiful boats it was hard to know where to point the camera. Here are a few from that day:

Black Watch plows toward the line just before the start of the Vintage 1 class. She was built in 1938 by Henry B. Nevins of City Island, New York to a Sparkman & Stevens design.

Gleam, a 12-Meter class sloop built in 1937 and used as a trial horse in the 1958 and 1962 America’s Cup campaigns, crosses tacks with Falcon, a 1936 sloop built to the New York Yacht Club 32-foot (waterline length) rule.

Marilee, a New York 40 sloop, was built in 1926 to the New York Yacht Club’s 40-foot (waterline length) rule and underwent an extensive restoration in 2016-2018. There is a very nice video on YouTube about the restoration. Search for “NY40 Marilee restoration”. An interesting fact about Marilee is that, during her restoration, she was re-built as a "convertible", so she can sail with either a Bermuda or gaff rig. On this day she was sailing as a Bermuda sloop.

Here are two schooners out of Boothbay; Lazy Jack and East Wind. They both carry paying passengers twice a day. If that's what it takes to keep these old schooners on the water, then so be it. I'm fairly certain there is another schooner out of Camden named Lazy Jack II.

On a personal note, two very good friends of mine were married at the church in the background of the last photo. You can only see the steeple.
