CD27 enjoying it

Just discovered this information exchange. Its great. we've owned our cd27 for almost two years and really love it. Its located on Lake Guntersville, Alabama. We've still got a lot to learn but are getting used to some of its traits. Has anyone had experience started the YSM 8 with the hand crank? The instruction book makes it sound simple. Is there a reprint of the owners manual available anywhere?

I also have a CD27 in Wilmington,NC. A couple of months I purchased the boat it has a fair amount of damage from Hurricane Fran. I been working on the boat and hope to have it in the water by the end of March. I would be interested in learning the same thing out Manual starting. Let me know what you find out. Thanks Bill

Good to hear from you and good luck with your 27. I made one attempt to hand start our 8 with no success Jean was working the decompression lever while I manned the crank. My conclusion is that I need a weight training course or a crank with a longer handle. Still It would be nice to be able to crank it in an emergency.

via the hand crank several times with no
problems. I hold the compression release
with my left hand and crank her up as fast
as I can with my right before releasing the
compression release lever. The little Yanmar
has never failed to start.

I forgot to mention, I sail my boat on the
Chesapeake Bay.

Newt Thanks for the reply. Your message is encouraging. I'll try it again after eating my wheaties. It would be great to be able to hand crank it. I talked with a friend who has an Island Packet and he said he hand cranked his 13 HP Yanmar in an emergency situation but was not able to do it later. What about the temperature of your engine after its run awhile. Ours has a heatexchanger so the raw water does not go through the engine and I can put my hand on the cylinder area but its to hot to leave it there for more the a couple of seconds. Does that sound O.K.? We have no guage.

Well, looks like my last try worked.

My guess is that your engine heat is ok. My
engine gets warm, but not too hot to touch.
I do not have a guage either, but there is a
visual and audio warning on my boat which
activates if the engine over heats. It has
only activated one time when the water pump
malfunctioned.

Your engine should be easy to crank with the
compression release engaged. I do not know
why you are having a problem. Is it possible
that you were trying to crank it while in gear?
Thats the only thing I can think of that might
make it harder to turn over.
