I just got my 1955 BMW R51/3 on the road (after 25 years in pieces in the garage) and I am still sailing. Mind you it is winter in Minnesota - so I can only do boat projects at the moment!

John sent me an email yesterday afternoon. He is doing well and was in light winds, but expected to find the trades soon. He indicated that the first week was “tough”. At the time he was approximately 300nm south of Bermuda and 600nm from the Virgins.
The distances I indicated are rhumbline distances, as such he has actually travelled a much greater distance to arrive at his position. Cape Dory’s are eminently seaworthy long distance cruisers.

I have included a screen shot of his position when he sent the note via his Garmin inReach device.

It looks like John has done most of his easting, which is the hardest part. Hopefully he has a nice trip the rest of the way south.

Received a message from John an hour ago. His position is approximately 140nm northeast of the Virgins, speed 6.25k and course southwest. Soon he will leave the cobalt sea and enter the turquoise waters.

Hi Everyone. Just arrived. On a US National Park Service mooring in Francis Bay, St John, USVI. I'll write about the trip later. This voyage turned out to be a tough one. Close reaching or beating the whole way. Except for light winds twice for maybe six hours it was often 20-25 kts. 25 G 28 last couple days. And just gobs of squalls which forced me to sail under canvased at night because I could not see those suckers. I thought it would take longer but it was almost the exact time as my last trip which was fabulous. Anyway, more later. Oh, one more thing. We have the ice box figured out. I loaded the box on 2 Dec. Today is 15 Dec. still have ice. Ha!

The ice in the icebox is good. But it's the load of stuff in your John Vigor's Black Box that really mattered. Well done!
