After I installed the chartplotter I was about to toss my Garmin handheld away. It was draining the batteries in a couple hours even when turned off. It used to go for several days. Garmin said they don't work on them anymore. I decided to hardwire it in and use it as a dedicated GPS for the vhf's Digital Selective Calling feature. It's working good now. I still think it's just extra unnecessary stuff on the boat. But what the hell.
I have it and may as well use it.
