replacing gaskets on ports

Post by Brian »

has anyone replaced the black rubber gaskets? Ours have started to break down and now have attached themselves to the glass. I see in the Spartan catalog you can order replacements. Before I tackle this job I would appreciate some advice. How long(est) should it take? Removing old gasket material? Recommend glue for attaching the new ones.

Thanks.

Brian:
we replaced the gaskets on our previous 28; used an adhesive (3M,I think) used to install gaskets on automobiles. As for time, the gaskets we got from Spartan were round, so you have to hold it in place long enough to set up; use the port itself, but be careful not to get adhesive on the glass! When we had the old gaskets out we used a bronze brush on a hand held drill to clean the old gaskets and the frames of the ports. As I recall, it was pretty messy.

We replaced the gaskets on our 28 also. Try wax paper between the glass and the foam. It can be held in place with tape and will help the job go a little smoother. Be sure to place the splice on the top side of the port to help ensure a good water tight seal. Hope this helps.

Brian,
You can make your own much cheaper than Spartan. Try using the search function when it is working again. You can by the neoprene or another type of (EDPM or HDPE or some other letters like that) seal. The gaskets that you make should be glued in with rubber cement. It is quick and very effective.
