I need to purchase foul weather gear for an up coming sail. I did a search on the net. and quickly found that there are many to choose from. Im wondering if I could get some advise on what to look for in a mid-range set. Im looking to spend no more than 200$ on a jacket. What are some of the good brands to look at. what are some of the better features to look for. Is their a mail order store to buy from that can be suggested?
Thanks Adam Z.

Re: Foul weather gear
Adam,
I have had a set of West Marine Explorer gear for a couple of years and have been very pleased with it. Got it for a gift, but the cost is under $400 for pants and jacket. Seems to have most of the features we need. Stay dry!

Re: Foul weather gear
Just make sure that the jacket and pants are made out of breathable material or you will be very uncomfortable. All of the decent manufacturers sell it.Good Luck

Re: Foul weather gear
I agree with the other post about the breathing aspects of the material. I always look for the neoprene seals on the wrist cuffs and a good fitting neck. I also look for well placed and large sized reflective patches on the hood, shoulders and wrists. A double flap protecting the front zipper area is important. Good quality drainage mesh in the sleeve ends and pockets are very important. Make sure there is enough room to wear layered clothing underneath and still be able to retain excellent movement. A good sized bill on the hood is important to shed water from the face. The hood should fit well also.
Pants need good quality suspenders and excellent butt and knee reinforcement. Always look for quality stitching throughout the entire set.
I've been using stuff made by High Seas (the yellow ones with the white shoulders and teal neck liner) that are great and are very reasonable and very well made. I know Boaters World carries some of their gear and I believe Defender does also.
