Better engine access cd 28

I saw some people have altered the wood piece that connects port side to starboard side
Behind the companion way so it can be removed thus giving
Access to the engine from above as well as from the front.

Does anyone have detailed instructions how to do this ?

I put an access hatch in the counter above the engine, which has worked great for me.

You guys have a totally different setup to my CD 28. Pics attached of my access. I also have a hatch in the port cockpit locker to give access to gearbox, shaft and stern gear.

Wow the engine access of your vintage Cape Dory 28 is so functional and the Yanmar engine looks almost new. I wonder why they changed the access and used Volvo MD7A engines?

I wonder that also. I am rather jealous of that great access!

The access makes a lot of sense. When in the range did it change? Re the Yanmar, it is almost new. Fitted 2013 but has only got 323 hours on the meter. She had a major refit between 2011 and 13. Perhaps a 30hp engine is a bit of overkill for a CD28, but I was glad of it when I got 20mph wind on the nose all the way down Loch Sween, about four miles. Not fun!

I turned down a 28 because of that poor engine access. I really do like the 28. I should have bought it and converted to electric.

Ooops……should have bought an older one…..then stick in a big Yanmar….
