For clearing the salt scale in the hoses I agree that fresh water flush does wonders in prevention. However when I had a heavy scale build up I used full strength muratic acid and let it cook overnight. Then flush until the tank is full and dump. With this method I would not allow any baking soda near the head until the tank has been cycled a couple times.
