CD 36 Shroud "Chain Plate" backing plate (Which hull number)

I thought I saw in this forum a reference to the hull number in which the steel backing plates under the shroud tangs on the CD 36 were switched over from mild steel to aluminum, but cannot find that reference now. It appears that the change was made in 1983. Does anyone know which hull number first incorporated the aluminum backing plates under the shroud tangs on the CD 36? If so, please let me know. Mahalo!

I have hull 61. Listed as an 82 but made in late 81. We have steel. This article, printed in summer 82, says the change was hull 71. That’s probably a reliable answer.

It’s irrelevant though. We have no rust on ours. I’d argue our boat is the strongest and fastest CD 36 afloat. There is no place I would not take it other than into the ice. I would not let a steel chainplate be a disqualifying issue on a 40 year old boat if the boat is otherwise in good shape.

Peter Hunt surveyed my boat and also worked at Cape Dory for a while. He told me that it was pretty random what material was used for the chain plates. Mostly cold steel but some aluminum and even a few with bronze.

Well, maybe but with regard to the CD 36 I have never seen or heard any evidence to support that claim. So far every 36 I have been on and every owner I have talked to, and their have been many, reflect they were build with steel or after #76 aluminum. Never heard of a 36 built with bronze backing plates for the shrouds. Maybe someone can say definitively they know of one...and perhaps which one. Maybe there was a special order with bronze but that would of course by definition not be random. Can’t say a thing about the Robinhood 36. I think there were only a couple of those built. As for other CDs...I have no idea. There were a lot built if you consider all those years and all those models. But again, I have frequented this forum for years and never heard of anything other than steel or aluminum. If anyone has empirical evidence to the contrary I’d sure be interested in learning about it.

I agree; I have never seen bronze chain plates. I'm only reporting what Peter Hunt told me in 2010, as I remember. Based on what he said, there were a tiny number of boats with bronze chain plates and I think it's extremely unlikely they were CD36's.

Oh I never thought you were claiming anything...just what you heard. Maybe there was one or two. I don’t know. If there were I think we’d all be interested in it. But I was just saying I am skeptical of his statement.
