CD 30 bow sprit?

Post by ghockaday »

From a discussion going on from the project listing. If you have a cape Dorey 30 cutter what is the bowsprit made of. Is it laminated teak. One piece board 2 inches thick 50 inches long 10 inches wideOr some other material

Mine was a fairly wide center piece, about 4in, tapered and then roughly 4 pieces, each 7/8 in on either side. My sprit was broken by another boat hitting CC in a storm and I replicated the original. I posted some photos in Jan 2020 about what I did. I thought I just found that and posted but maybe I got sidetracked. Let me know if you need help tracking that down, I'll find them.

Jeff, do you remember what type of wood it was?

I believe they were teak originally. Nowadays you could probably consider ipe or Iroko as well for a similar combination of strength and rot resistance. Good luck with this project.

The original and the replacement were/are both teak. I live pretty close to Boulter Plywood which carries teak so it was relatively easy to get. I milled it myself.
