Cape Dory Window Gaskets
Probably not what you thought. I have new Cape Dory gaskets and new bronze screens. Here is my complaint about the beautiful bronze windows. Why oh why did Cape Dory, Spartan, put them in rain catcher mode? an inch or so back, angle up of all things to hold water. If you hatch is not bar tight or you happen to open it water runs in your cabinets or on your mattress. Dennis

Mine do that too. I noticed that on a CD 28 here in the marina his has two drainage notches cast into it. I can't tell by the photo in Spartan's catalog if they are there. Maybe I'll get a picture later.

I try to remember to run a towel around them before I open them.

Re: Cape Dory Window Gaskets
We've gotten pretty good about opening them with an Absorber towel (One of the best damn boat products ever!) right beneath. It does take a certain technique. Still, if you're not paying attention you can get a nice splash in the morning.
Spartan and Cape Dory added the two drains to their portlight casting in 1983. My boat is a 1982. C'est la vie.

KAYLA is also 1982... I would love to see a pic of the "new & improved" ports...

Sorry for the quality of these pictures but here is an exterior shot and an interior shot which show the drains to keep water from collecting when the ports are secured. Orion was built in 1984.mgphl52 wrote:KAYLA is also 1982... I would love to see a pic of the "new & improved" ports...

Look's like a great upgrade fro CD. My 1979 30C hull #134 does not have the channels. So somewhere between 79 and 84 they were added. I'm sure the other will help nail down the implementation date a bit more.

PS The toe and rub rail look great Jim. Did you also do the eye brow at a later date?

I wonder if a few well placed holes drilled through the casting, angled up from the bottom at 45° would work? Could be an expensive mistake though

Tim, I was thinking a similar thought about putting a piece of a rat tailed file in my drill and grinding out some bronze to create a similar channel to Jim's pic. It of course would not have the cast lip. Next time I'm at the boat I'll see if it is feasible. I'll also check out drilling a hole(s).

The first photo is from 2013 and the last photo is from 2015. Yes the eyebrow was done in the fall of 2013. This past fall I stripped all the old finish off and reapplied Cetol Light.Keith wrote:Look's like a great upgrade fro CD. My 1979 30C hull #134 does not have the channels.
