Lazy Jacks for 25D??

Post by n5ama »

I see Harken and Nautos Lazy Jack systems. Is there a preferred vender for my 25D?

Thanks

On our 30 I thought the kits were expensive. Just line, a couple of cheek blocks and some thimbles or slides of some sort.

A couple of years ago, I bought a set of Jiffy Jax on eBay for my 25D. They had never been installed, but were sized for a rig about the same as a 25D. They are self stowing along the boom and have worked out very well. I paid about $200. for them and like them a lot. I think this is their website http://www.jiffyjax.com

The first time I bought KAYLA (our CD28) she had lazy jacks. They were quickly removed... and I've never regretted it.

Thanks, I understand they can be a real problem hanging up the battens if they are not stowed away when raising the sail.

Thanks Bob. They look very interesting and I especially like the self stowing feature.

I have to agree with Mike. I've had lazy jacks for several years and I came around to disliking them.
Maybe it's because I stowed them along the boom when sailing. The aggravation of dealing with them
was just not worth it. Toward the end of the boom, the sail always flopped out anyway. With full length
battens, it would be a totally different story, I'm sure.
For me, corralling the sail with a couple of sail ties is simpler. - Jean

Thanks Jean. That is my inclination at this time.

I love lazy jacks, When sailing we leave them out, just loose enough to not raise up on the boom. Tighten'm up and turn in the wind and the sail flakes in to place. To each his own. Dennis

This is a personal preference thing. But note the sail on the 25D is small, not big. One, yes just one well placed sail tie will control the canvas when it drops until it can be attended to. And that one sail tie will never hang up on anything or be in the way. Try going without LJs for a while. And remember that everything you put on your mast and deck will hang up something or stub your toe or...

CD27 owner here, with a boat that didn't come with lazy jacks and and old set of sails. It wasn't that big of a deal to get the sail on the mast and tied up. A little cleaning up at the slip, good to go.

Then I got brand new sails.

Completely different experience. Much harder to wrestle the sail on to the boom, as well as more effort to get things organized at the slip. Much better sailing, though. I got a set of the jiffy jacks. I pull them out of the way before tossing the sail cover on at the end of the day. Never had the battens catch.

This season, I had the boat trucked to my new location, and haven't made it up the mast to reinstall them. I'm in a lake now, and dealing with my southern brethren and their power boats, it not much fun wrestling the sail into place. Looking forward to get these up and running.

At the end of the day, it's personal preference. I do think the stiffness of the sail is an overlooked piece of that equation.

Good point, that is when we put them on. Slippery new sails that wanted to go everywhere. Dennis

I sailed a Marshall Sanderling catboat before I got my 25D. It was almost impossible to handle the single enormous sail without ladyjacks.

But ladyjacks seem superfluous on the CD with its smaller mainsail. Because I sail on Buzzards Bay, MA, with its high winds, I often tuck a reef into the main. Reefing makes it even easier to lower the sail.

It's a question of taste, but I prefer to keep my running rigging simple, so I don't have ladyjacks.

Hmmm ... I've got the Schaeffer lazy jacks ... they came with my boat. They don't stow out of the way, but with practice, hooking a battan hoisting the main is rare ... I just push the boom out to the apparent angle of the wind.

Don't overlook how helpful they are when reefing

but clearly a personal pref ...

Yeah, we have them on our 31, along with full battens. We agree with fmeuller that it takes a bit of technique to avoid snagging a batten on the jacks but you get used to it.

I've thought about installing a third jack toward the aft end of the boom to avoid the sail spinning out onto the dodger and bimini. Or moving the aft jack farther aft. Any thoughts on this idea?

Other than the above, I don't know jack****!!!

And all of you out there: stay healthy and dream about a good summer of sailing and friendship.
