CD25 mast winch

Post by n5ama »

I would like to upgrade the mast winch used for the main halyard on my CD-25D. It is the original number 6 winch and I would like to go at least a “7” winch. I would prefer not drilling new holes in the mast, so I guess my question is: do the 6 and 7 winches use the same mounting holes. If not, then I guess the alternative is to lead the main halyard back to the rear of the cabin and install whatever winch I can afford and a clutch.

Anyone have any experience with this?
Thanks in advance to any help!

You didn’t specify the make of the winch so I presume it’s a Lewmar. These schematics indicate that some components are the same but the spindles are not. It is safe to assume they would have a different mounting pattern but we all know what happens when we assume.
If there is a marine consignment shop near you you may be lucky to find one and verify the dimensions.

Thanks Jim!
I'm fairly certain the mast winch is Lewmar. I'll have to check to be sure. I've got bronze #7 winches for the jib sheets in the cockpit but I think they are not Lewmar. I haven't pulled them down for cleaning and relube but will check the pattern on those when I do. I have no problem going to the mast to raise the mail and have to be there anyway to lower it because the boat isn't equipped with lazy jacks (yet).
