I know Mike, Captain Hook, I and others joke around a lot about hurricanes. It's a stress reliever. But these systems have huge costs in lives, property, infrastructure, etc. Those of us in the path of "hurricane alley" know all to well the devastation a Cat. 1 can bring, let alone a Cat. 4 or 5.

Sadly, Hurricane Eta is going to devastate a wide area of Nicaragua and Honduras before it drops down to a depression and "just" inflicts a lot of rain and flooding.

For those who can do so, you may want to consider making a donation to any one of several organizations. I am sure that the International Rad Cross and other humanitarian organizations will be en route to Nicaragua to assist with recovery. When you have sustained 150 mph winds and a fragile infrastructure and poor housing codes (if any) it is a recipe for catastrophic losses.

I know technically this season does not end until 30 November and there is still the potential for tropical systems into December. However, I am hoping this season ends soon. We have all had enough (actually too much) for one season.

Roberto,

I totally agree! Enough is enough! But I feel the same about political ads....
However, don't let your guard down. We have history of not only May, but also December & January hurricanes.
Mother Nature seems to have her own calendar...

Just found this link for "out of season" hurricanes and storms:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_o ... statistics
Looks like the only month of the year is March... yet there was 1 recorded in March in 1908!

Mike, when I read your post I was reminded of the WWII Movie "Kelly's Heroes". Sgt. Oddball, a tank commander, chides Moriarty with the phrase: "Always with the negative waves Moriarty, always with the negative waves." :D :D :D

You have got to be freaking kidding me :!: :!: :!:
Might as well put a bullseye on my house and my Cape Dory 25D.
To make matters worse, the waters in the Yucatan Straits are still very warm as are the waters in the Florida Straits. A TS could easily become a hurricane in hours, not to mention a major hurricane.

Geez... maybe it's time to shave your neck? :D
BTW, I still haven't gotten KAYLA back to her slip across the street. Waiting for the new pilings to be installed and I cannot access her for simple sailing where she's moored. :(

Fear not Oh Captain, my Captain.

I am "on station, on duty" ready to update with the latest and most accurate tropical storm updates.

Eta is now projected to head into the Gulf of Mexico where there remains a lot of warm water. Eta could proceed N or NW or even do a "dog leg" up and East towards our good friend Mikey (a/k/a Moriarty :D :D ). I am not prepared to forecast this at this time (Jim "the Hurricane" Cantore has asked me not to) but some hairs on the back of my neck are suggesting (speculating :?: ) that Eta may decide she has had enough and dissipates in 4-5 days. Just rank speculation but the neck hairs are twitching.

Mike, I am an innocent man wrongly accused. I make one little off-handed remark about my neck hairs and all of sudden I am responsible for the path of hurricanes in the Western Hemisphere :!: I categorically deny responsibility. :D  :D

As you know, tropical systems in November in the Caribbean are very unpredictable. They have a tendency to "meander", which is what ETA is doing. NHC/NOAA projects hurricane strength (albeit nominal) once ETA is well within Florida Straits - it's very warm water.

The so-called "European model" has been VERY accurate on this one - better than NHC/NOAA. Unfortunately, the Euro model has ETA making a "right turn" just past Key West and heading north towards the panhandle of Florida. NHC/NOAA currently projects a path into the Tampa area. I have relatives in the Tampa area so................................... :? :?

No worries, Roberto! At this point, I'd actually be interested in seeing yet another named storm; just to break the 2005 record...
But, only if said "next storm" stays far offshore of *any* land!

Yea!!! At least Theta knows which direction to go...
Now, if we could just get Eta to make a 270 degree counter-clockwise turn and spin out all of its energy in the Gulf???
