Green stuff on deck/cockpit - What is it?
First summer in the South for me and the boat has come to a close. I'll admit I've been lax on doing occassional scrub downs. Noticed that for the first time in the four seasons I've owned the boat, she's taken on a greenish tinge in places. Not sure what it is - running a finger through it wiped it off. I assume more frequent washing and getting a coat of wax on at the start of the humid months is the proper preventative?

Mine is taking on a greenish tinge from all of the dollar bills I keep pouring into her.

Mildew more than likely. A bunch of stuff made to get your other greens to get it off. It will continue to come back if left alone. You wipe off the green, kind of like its leaves, the root stays behind in the microscopic creviouses in the gel coat. But regular washing will keep it at bay. Dennis

We get a lot of that here in the Pacific Northwest. If is left there to grow it looks a lot like moss. I scrub it off and it comes back, but I don't see it as a big deal. I also try to keep all lines of the deck since it takes advantage of the moisture in the lines. Around here, if you stand still for 5 minutes, it starts growing on you. while it isn't hot here, it is quite humid and is a great environment for it to grow.

Here as well, I felt like this year I was molding. Yes, I have see the moss looking stuff too. It was on the topping lift line. But we get the heat with the humidity. I don't know what is worse, cold and clammy or hot and sweaty.BernieA wrote:We get a lot of that here in the Pacific Northwest. If is left there to grow it looks a lot like moss. I actually prefer cold and clammy. When its like that you can always add layers. When its hot and sweaty you run out of clothes to take off pretty quickly.

A scrub brush and "Simple Green" has worked well for us. For more stubborn stains and to slow down future growth chlorine bleach and TSP work even better. Bleach and TSP aren't the most environmentally friendly things. Real TSP isn't even available in some areas.
