Spinnaker Size CD30

Post by ghockaday »

I have looked and looked and can't find this answer. I have seen it asked on here but there was never a reply.
We don't race and we sail the lower Chesapeake Bay.

We currently fly a 31' by 28' by 21' our rule of thumb is to pull it down when the boat speed exceeds 5 knots, especially if gusty. I am unsure of the weight.
My wife loves to sail and the last thing I want to do is scare her with a spinnaker.

From what I have found and it is hard to find any data, seems a typical size is 36' by 34' by 22'.

What size are most boats spinnakers (asymmetrical) using?
What weight?

Any help is appreciated, we use strictly for lite wind sailing.

Yes, that is the only place I have found it. Me being Me and not believing that everything on the internet is true, I'd like to find some folks with real world experience. Beginning to think that it is a taboo question as I have seen it asked on here several times with out a single reply. I assume most folks who have a CD30s do not use them, maybe to difficult? Don't know.

Anyhow, thank you very much for your reply. Dennis

Mine measures luff 34' leach 31' foot 21. I believe that it is the original that was delivered with the boat.

Thank you Keith, that is pretty close to the size we currently fly. No sure the extra couple of feet would make a huge difference. This one may be original too. Made by hood, but it is in fantastic shape. Dennis

Sailrite has a bit of "real world experience" that extends over quite a few decades. They state explicitly that their stated measurements are derived from the original Alberg (and hence Cape Dory) sail plans. I've never bothered with them, but many others have and these same folks have lived to tell about it. It's possible of course that writers to this board know better and I suspect they'll of course eventually let you know about it.

We have made sailrite sails (kit) for a Pearson 26 as well as dodgers and sail covers. I know their expertise in sail making. But real world is what works well for the boat, not just based off of the rig dimensions. That is why I was asking opinions. Thank you for your reply. Dennis

In the past 60 or so years, I've yet to see the difference. Still, what works is what works.
