Ideas for capping galley counter hole?

Post by Bill Goldsmith »

Loonsong came to me with a counter top manual seawater galley hand pump that I disconnected a long time ago as I never used it and it was seized anyway. I finally decided to remove it while replacing the nearby manual counter top fresh water pump that I do use. The removal has left a ~ 1 inch hole in the galley counter with two accompanying mounting screw holes. The countertop is the original white melamine/plywood. The back of the hole is accessible from a recessed storage compartment.

Ideas that come to mind are:

-Fill the holes with epoxy and paint white. Easy to do but it will always look like a patch job.
-Glue a thin rectangle of white plastic over the holes. Also easy, but as above will always look like a patch, although perhaps less noticeable.
-Install a small cylindrical flower vase, similar idea as VW put in some of its Beetles. That would take care of the big hole but not the mounting screw holes, though.
-Put in a new seawater galley pump. Except I really wouldn't use it and have already removed the hoses that used to supply the old one.

Any other ideas?

Thanks!!

If you post a picture I’d have a better idea of options.

You could try some white plastic hole caps. They come in all sizes and don't protrude much. - Jean

Someone already mentioned using a bung for the 1” hole. You could also make one from a 1” dowel. You can either open up the screw holes so you can use smaller bungs in them as well of fill them with epoxy. Then prep the entire countertop for painting if you don’t want it to look like a patch. There are paints just for Formica.

These may help:

Increase the size of the hole and install a cup holder. You can never have too many of those.

I love that! Take a defect and turn it into a feature.

Look at all the threaded plastic plumbing items at Home Depot. They come in black, white or grey. You might find something that fits the hole and looks sort of important!
