Request info about my Cape Dory Typhoon

Post by Dutchsailer1948 »

Good day, bought recently a Cape Dory Typhoon 18ft weekender saw her for sale on the internet,
and nearby where i live at Rotterdam.
Sold few years ago my previous sailboat Seal22 (with regret) however missed the freedom and start looking for another sailboat, made appointment with the seller and had a look what i saw surprised me built in the USA teak and bronze fittings including the bracket for the outboardmotor and the original sails. The seller told me it was his fathers boat ( now being 83 years) and to old for sailing. When his father bought the Cape Dory he was 76 years old.
Myself being 72 years old coincidence ??
After torough cleaning the Cape Dory and scrubbed the wood she became quite a lady, sails very nice. Many Dutch people are curious where she cames from.
Myself asking the same how my Cape Dory came to the Netherlands.
Guess not by sailing the ocean herself.

Would like to know, on the stern i found this number CPDD1406V776 on the bronze plate from the builder the number 1406 and on the starboard bench number 2-22-77
What is the age of my Cape Dory ?

Kind regards with many thanks in advance for all cooperation.

Good for you. Typically the last two digits of the CPD number large the year of manufacture. I owned a Ty for some years and it is a nice sailing boat that always draws complements. There will be much written and ample help on this Board, welcome. I am sure your CD has a story, good you are searching for it.

Petro, welcome. You can tell your Dutch admirers that the Typhoon’s designer was a Swedish born naval architect, Carl Alberg. He moved to the US in the mid 1920’s and designed almost all of the Cape Dory sailboats. They are all very sea worthy. So your boat has roots from your neck of the woods. Enjoy your acquisition.

Congratulations on your new boat! Welcome to the forum!

I also have a Typhoon and I think it's the perfect "last boat", if there is such a thing as the "last boat". The Typhoon is easy to handle even for people of advanced years, yet provides the kind of sweet sailing characteristics to please someone with a lifetime of sailing experience.

Here's what your hull identification number means:

CPD Cape Dory is the manufacturer of the boat
D The model code for the Typhoon Weekender. (Note, it would be "G" if the boat were a Typhoon Daysailer)
1406 The hull number of your boat--the 1406th Typhoon that came off the assembly line
V776 Are you sure about this? Could it be "M77G"? On my Typhoon the last 4 digits are the letter M (meaning the optional dating scheme was used) followed by the model year of the boat, followed by a letter A-L indicating the month of manufacturer (A=August, B=September, C=October, D=November, E=December, F=January, G=February, H=March, I=April, J=May, K=June, L=July). Note that for boats built during the months August through December, they were actually built in the year prior to the year shown, for example M77A is a 1977-model-year boat built in August 1976, not 1977, while M77L is a 1977 model-year-boat built in July 1977.

Anyway, if your date code is M77G as I suspect it is, that would be February 1977, which would match with the date 2-22-77 you found in the starboard bench. (Here in the United States we use month-day-year order.)

A good reference for this is https://www.boatsafe.com/hull-id-numbers/

Smooth sailing,

Jim
