Cabin mystery....

Post by s2sailorlis »

If anyone can figure this one out, they should get an award:

Two weeks ago I was out sailing on my CD22, alone. I wore sailing gloves. At the end of the days sail, I hung each glove on the port-light holding chain that hangs from the ceiling. One glove on each chain, hung inside out so they’d dry.

Fast forward today....

I was preparing for an afternoon sail by myself. I grabbed one glove off the chain, put it right side out, shook it and put it on. All good.

I grabbed the second glove and walked out of the cabin to the cockpit. I started to shake it out and something about 1 inch or so fell out...hit the side deck and fell into the water. It made a distinctive sound as if it was a shell. I couldn’t make out what it was but some dirt fell onto the seat and several tiny, very tiny Crustacea were there....

How in the Lord’s name could a crab or whatever make its way into the cabin, crawl up the side, then onto the cabin top down the chain into the glove. None of the port lights were open over the two week period.....

I’m flummoxed....

Was the cabin locked up tight?

Probably a snail.

Have you seen the Twilight Zone episode about the earwig?
Be thankful that it fell out, it could have bored into you.

Are you sure it wasn't a mud wasp?

I was expecting to hear that you tossed the chain, overboard, Steve.

i don't think it was a mud dauber. would have expected the best to kind of break apart upon impact. this has a distinct sound in the bounce.

oh well..it was a strange day overall for me i guess...

Not quite an earwig episode but ... after my first year in Arizona it became a habit to shake out gloves, shoes, hats and any article of clothing left on the boat .... scorpions ... They like to nest in soft articles of clothing and are nimble enough to crawl onto the boat, I presume along mooring lines since I've never seen one jump or fly for that matter. BTW they sound almost metallic when they fall, or are flung away in terror, onto a hard surface :)

Yikes... that would be bit problematic...

I’m now rethinking It was a mud dauber nest. Didn’t realize they like to eat spiders so perhaps the little crawly things were spiders brought back to the nest. There were mud dauber flying about and one in the cabin...luckily they aren’t aggressive as the Yellowjackets in my yard..

Check out this YouTube video from Gone With The Wynns. It looks like what you are describing:

Smooth sailing,
