Epoxy-Based vs. Vinyl Bottom Paint?

Anybody have opinions on bottom paint types?

Since I'm stripping down to a bare hull, I can start from scratch. The Owners Manual says to use a epoxy-based bottom paint, but then again it was written in 1984 and, besides, I believe they originally shipped it with epoxy-based bottom paint on it (vinyl needs a clean surface).

From what little I've been able to find out, it appears that the vinyl bottom paint gives a slicker, thinner finish and is easier to remove at season's end. Pricewise, the two types seem roughly comparable.

So, what'll it be? A half dozen, . . . or six?

CD used a hard epoxy based paint made by Rule (Gloucester, MA). It was an average quality.

I would suggest one of the new multi year abative paints like the Interlux CSC. Once you decide on vinyl, that's it.....you must continue using vinyl since no other paint can be used over it. Many folks like the vinyl on trailerable or fast hulls. But to the point.....I hate peeling paint and paint which oxidizes when you pull the boat. These new paints don't need all that scraping, sanding, and they really keep their effectiveness even when you pull the boat from year to year. What a difference in the amount of work and mess in the spring!

Although they are more expensive, you do not spend any more money because you are not constantly sanding or scraping it off to get effective anti-foulant on the boat. Last haulout for me was the first time in 3-1/2 years. Paint was still good.

If you peel all of the paint off the boat, DO PUT BARRIER COAT(S) on.
It is just too good of an opportunity if the bottom is bare. Please don't pass it up. I have had excellent result with the WEST SYSTEM and not so good results with the "micro-plate" INTERLUX 2000 barrier system. Observations of other boat and their owners reflect the same opinion.

I too am in the middle of a complete bottom strip. I am trying the non caustic peel away followed by a heavy sanding. I don't want to deal with this process again, so I am ditching epoxy and vinyl bottom paints. Im going to try the Ablative route. Either Petit Aqua Clean or Woolsey Neptune II. I understand that they both come from the same vat.... I like the concept of ablative paints, and the fact that they are water based should make for less of a mess. (easier to clean anyway)
