Not sure what you decided, but just about any old laptop fitted with OpenCPN and the available free charts is likely to fit the bill. There are many cheap GPS fobs that work with this setup.Dave Berquist wrote:Thanks to all - very educational process, this!

You've been given some great advice. I would encourage you to keep an open mind about hand-held GPS units. I sailed with one for a very long time before upgrading to a fairly small chartplotter. The coverage area of the nautical charts is excellent, and you quickly adjust to zooming in and out to see just the level of detail you want. For a Typhoon, I would think that would be all you need.
