Info on Sandy Hook and He’ll Gate?

Post by John Stone »

Hello everyone. On a delivery NC to Beaufort. Arrive NY this evening. Looking for some local knowledge for anchoring vic Sandy Hook with a 58’ ketch. Anticipate SW to WNW in T storms if they develop. Owner has a plan for Hudson River marina tonight but looking for a bailout option with possible late afternoon T storms.

Any comments on hellgate on the flood?

Thanks.

Head down to Atlantic Highlands, NJ and anchor south of the channel, east of the south mooring field, inside the breakwater. The holding is good in mud. This time of year you may be able to anchor north of the channel, east of the north mooring field, and still be behind the breakwater. Otherwise, get a slip from the Atlantic Highlands Municipal Marina. Vessels over 50 feet are not permitted on the Yacht Club moorings.

Atlantic Highlands YC (VHF CH. 9): https://ahyc.clubexpress.com/

Atlantic Highlands Municipal Marina (VHF CH. 9): http://www.ahnj.com/ahnj/Harbor/
The municipal Marina will charge you $3.00 per foot.

You can also anchor in Coney Island Creek, Brooklyn, NY. There are a lot of wrecks in there, including a submarine, but you can anchor off of the park.

Fair winds,

Thanks Cathy. Good info. We made it to the Hudson River Marina. Head through Hell Gate tomorrow.

NYC curfew moved up to 2000 (8 PM).

A little background on the Coney Island Creek submarine, please! Every anchorage should have a sunken submarine, but alas, mine doesn't.
