Typhoon Cam Cleat

Post by mfratt14 »

I recently purchased a 1974 Typhoon and am restoring little by little. The cam cleat for the main sheet is in poor shape and I am looking to replace it. I'm wondering if anyone has had any luck or suggestions. The one pictured below is what I have removed and I believe is original to the vessel.

Yes, that looks like original issue. My 1976 Typhoon had the same phenolic cam cleat setup. If you want to replicate that look, Fisheries Supply offers something similar... https://www.fisheriessupply.com/davey-a ... 4455-oo-10. I made my own replacement by mounting a modern cam cleat and teak fairlead to an appropriate sized teak block.

I also had a 76 Ty WE and it had that same cam cleat. When I sold it last year it was still working pretty well. My new dilemma is to find a replacement for the cam cleat on my new to me 1981 Ty WE. I had the deck painted and I am replacement the standup spring blocks which I was lucky to find at RigRite with the old square base plates. For this Clam Cleat I cannot find anything with this base plate shape, mounting hole layout and fairlead. I am inclined to replace the cams and use the old plate and fairlead. Any tips on this would be appreciated. If the fitting still exists, cam source and preferred sealant for remounting? I still have the backer plates plates for mounting and the deck area is solid.

Perhaps something here fits. If you look at the detailed description for an item you will find a tab for “specs” which provides the center to center and fastener sizes. This would be for the cam cleat replacement, not for the entire assembly. Just remove the old cam cleat and replace with the new.
