Fayaway winter projects: chainplates, dodger and more

Materials including carbon fiber and epoxy have arrived for the project this week. We have an ambitious goal of getting the old chainplates removed completely and beginning glass work. We have three full days to work so I'm optimistic! I'm also gathering materials for the dinghy build, so many more updates are coming soon...

Beginning on the second day of the new year, we started demolition work on the old chainplate system. We had already removed the ceiling boards, exposing the fiberglass liner. We had also removed cabinetry and hanging locker door in the head to gain access to the forward chainplates. We started by cutting away the liner in the main cabin, creating large access panels which will later be reinstalled with screws to create easily removable panels for later access and inspection. Our Dremel multi-tool earned it's keep this weekend, and at this point we've finished the starboard side and nearly finished the port side. The starboard side was in excellent condition, which meant removing the entire backing plate in one piece. The port side was corroded to the point that the backing plate came out in great chunks of rusted steel. We still have a small section of steel and fiberglass to remove between the bulkhead and the hull on the port side. Then we'll clean everything up and prepare for glassing.

Demolition work is never fun but it seems you have a well thought out plan for a big improvement. Well worth the effort.

Shifting gears a little, I took advantage of an unseasonably warm day (which are getting more and more frequent) to template for the dodger. I work at a canvas shop so I'll be sewing it myself. It's going to be "California" style with removable windows and wings to provide airflow on hot days while still affording the extra shade over the companionway. I bent the frame a couple months ago, and already have most of the materials to get started.

Hi Jack, funny coincidence! We actually adopted the name from a Typhoon Sr. I used to own that had belonged to St. John's College. It's a great name!

I've been neglecting updates on my projects, which obviously have now all come crashing to a halt. The exception is the dinghy which is underway but moving a little slowly until I get all the supplies. I did build the dodger which I'm very proud of:

We were nearing completion on the chainplate project right before all this started, so once we're allowed back to the boat we'll wrap that up. Materials for the solar panels are on their way, but again, no access to the boat right now.

I have made sail covers for the main and staysail and also covers for the wheel and pedestal. They came out great my next task will be the dodger but I have been putting it off, now you have given me some incentive.

I had to pay big bucks for mine. It should last the rest of my life. It's an "Iverson". I was installing the cockpit canvas when this photo was taken. I have it all tightened up nicely now.What are they called? One guy called them cockpit curtains. He's a liveaboard and never sails. just thinks they are for privacy. I was referring to them as splash shields.

Keith, the key is a good template. If you have an accurate template and sew on the lines it'll come out perfect.

JD, that's a very nice dodger. They did a good job. I've since added struts and side grab rails to mine and it's as solid as can be. I also used stainless awning track with bolt rope for the forward windows and added some coamings on the cabin top to seal it up nicely. I template and install these things for a living but this is the first one I've sewn myself.

I finally made it back to the boat, and got her washed and waxed and bottom painted. But boat projects never end and one thing always leads to another. I decided over the winter to replace the shaft log hose, which is swollen from internal corrosion. Not a good sign. Of course, I can't get the prop shaft out of the coupling and there's no room to get tools in there to press it out if I remove the coupling from the transmission. Sigh. So now I'm seriously considering cutting the shaft out and getting a new shaft and split coupling. Of course the cutless bearing looks worn out so then I'm into that project too. I could just scrap the whole project but then I'm gonna be losing sleep over a six inch piece of bad hose for a summer. I still haven't decided on a course of action but I'm working away on the dinghy and some teak projects in the mean time and dreaming of sailing in a few weeks.
