Locations for Installing a Manual Bilge Pump in a TY Senior

Post by MHBsailor »

Defender is having their annual sale and I want to purchase a manual bilge pump probably a Titan Gusher (mostly to occasionally pump out rainwater), but I'm not sure about whether to get the model with the built-in cover or not, as the former would be for mounting so the flip-up cover is on the port or starboard cockpit wall, or to mount it internally out-of-sight in one of the cockpit lockers.

I would be interested to know where other TY Senior and CD 22 owners that have their factory bilge pumps mounted,
as ideally I'd like to keep it as original as possible. Please include a photo if possible (I realize that many boats are still in winter storage). Having said that, the factory would have continued to evolve their thinking about where and how to mount accessories if they were still in business, so I am not adverse to better ideas than they had in the mid-1980s.

I am really looking ready to Spring commissioning and getting back on the water. I've never sailed on a 22-footer that is anywhere as stable as this little CD - she sails like a bigger heavier boat.

Stay safe fellow Cape Dorians - we'll get through this! Until then, sailing is an enjoyable way to practice "social distancing". :D

On my 1984 CD22....I’ll have to dig out pictures, but mine seems to be a factory installed whale gusher pump. It is mounted in the starboard lazarette against the aft wall.

It’s nicely out of the way and works fine, though I rarely need it as the bilge is pretty dry though there is a pesky deck leak somewhere when it rains heavily, but never more than a cup or so even then...

I also have a larger Beckson hand pump too just in case...

Planning to uncover my boat sometime next week (got a winter storm coming tomorrow), so I can take a picture then, but my factory installed pump is starboard side of the lazarette close to the motor well. I think it's a good location, if necessary you could operate it while holding the tiller and sailing single handed (hate to think of the situation where that might be necessary!). I replaced it with a Whale Gusher, closest thing I could find to the original.

I generally pump before and after leaving my mooring, but to be honest there's rarely any water in the bilge. Heavy rainstorm will do it sometimes but I'm not exactly sure how the water gets in there.

Agree that a boat is not a bad place to be during a pandemic--unless of course you have an infected crewmember! Then it's probably about the worst place to be. I hear a couple of our navy's carriers are out of commission now because COVID-19 was discovered on board.

Thank you both for your replies. I found a photo that another Cape Dorian with a TY Senior sent me (attached) that looks like it is installed on the forward starboard cockpit wall. While it is out-of-the-way there, it requires holding up the cockpit seat cover to use.
However, like you, the only time I ever get anything water in the bilge is after heavy wind-driven rain. I fiddled with precisely aligning the three cabin hatch drop boards and found that that helped some. I think one of the hoses on a cockpit drain has slid down enough that it could be leaking into the bilge from there but that is an easy fix.
