Genoa blocks
Recent purchase Typhoon #210. I sail solo. Genoa blocks are very small Schaefer marine. Would like to replace with larger Harken .
What size is recommended ?
Also hexaratchet vs non hexaratchet
Thanks

FLYING CIRCUS
Re: Genoa blocks
Hi:
I crewed on a boat that had hexaratchet genoa blocks. This is what happened: The genoa sheet is trimmed in, let out, trimmed in, out frequently (constantly?) while sailing. If the block is clicked into the ratchet mode, the sheave is locked, so instead of rolling smoothly, the line is yanked through the block. After a while, this results in the sheet beginning to shred, a disconcerting experience.
One can leave the genoa blocks in the hexaratchet "off" position, but then why use hexaratchet blocks as genoa blocks at all?
Good Luck,
Tony Jeske

Re: Genoa blocks
I'd tend to agree with Anthony. Hexaratchet blocks are for when you'll be holding the sheet and adjusting it frequently. Maybe that's how you sail your Typhoon, but I'm significantly more casual about it, so my sheets stay cleated most of the time.
I'm curious: Why do want to replace your genoa blocks with larger ones?

Re: Genoa blocks
I replaced a most of the blocks on Raven with these. Nice smooth bearing blocks at a fraction of the price of the big names. You can get aluminum or stainless. I am not sure if the genoa tracks on the Ty are 3/4 or 1" but these guys seem to be able to accommodate unusual sizes and requests. These are much nicer than the originals and they do have a sizing chart, Steve.

3/4", unfortunately, which makes it challenging to find quality hardware. It seems like all the "big boat" hardware--genoa blocks, clutches--is too large for a Typhoon, and the dinghy hardware just doesn't look right.Steve Laume wrote:I am not sure if the genoa tracks on the Ty are 3/4 or 1"

Re: Genoa blocks
Call the folks at Garhauer and see if they can make up a set for 3/4" tracks. They are very good about making modifications to their hardware. they might not be able to do it but it would be worth a call, Steve.

the larger blocks have less friction

Re: Genoa blocks
If you go with ball bearing blocks, friction will not be an issue, Steve.
Re: Genoa blocks
I see you are in Noank. Before I moved away from New England, I kept boats at Spicer's for many years. Great cruising out to Block, Newport, Cuttyhunk, the Vinyard and Nantucket.
Anyway, I already bought the blocks and they are a great improvement.

Agree with gettin ball bearing blocks. That reduces friction tremendously...
