What has been used in the past? I changed to Castrol synthetic quite some time ago but if your engine has many, many hours on it you may be better off sticking with a great old oil like SAE 30 Shell Rotella Turbo.

Not your question but......I'd convert the raw water cooling to freshwater cooling or at the minimum install a freshwater flush out system.
