In unrelated correspondence, a former CD owner wrote me this:
Some time in the late 70's when I was living in my boat, another Cape Dory 28 showed up in the marina. He was a single-hander and was planning to cross the Atlantic. He had come down the Mississippi River and through the Industrial Canal to get into the lake. When he went through the lock in the canal, they had him tie up behind a towboat with barges, and when the tug started up he was pushed against the wall causing damage to his rigging, so he was in the marina to get it repaired at our boat yard. Anyway, when we were talking he mentioned that he wanted to insure with Lloyds of London, and when he called their agent he was told immediately that there were only two lines of production boats made in the US that they would insure. He said "I have a Cape Dory" and the agent replied "That's one of them." I've been wondering ever since what the other one was.
