Website Security

Post by Sea Hunt Video »

I am not at all knowledgeable about computers, etc. so I ask this question from a position of zero knowledge.

The other day I looked at the CDSOA website and there is a symbol for a "lock" icon on the address page of the Cape Dory website. The "lock" has a red line through it. Moving the cursor "arrow" over the lock icon and it says "connection is not secure". I do not believe I have ever seen this before at least I don't think I have. :?

Is there an issue with the CDSOA website or is it an issue with my laptop or is it something else altogether :?: :?: :?:

Thanks.
Fair winds,

Roberto

Hi Roberto,
I get the "Not Secure" often when I am on this site. I try to always use a "Private Window" or "Incognito Window" when I login. I am not sure that really offers any more protection , but it is an easy thing to do.

I always get the “Not Secure” website notification on my iPad.....I just ignore it. When Bob Dugan and Cathy Monaghan stop posting I’ll get nervous.....

It's nothing to worry about. All it means is that the connection between your computer and the server that's hosting the CDSOA website is unencrypted. If you're concerned that someone might snoop on your browsing activity here, then that might be a concern for you! But I don't think it's worth fretting about. Unencrypted browsing used to be the norm, and still is to some extent. If your bank website says it's "not secure," then you need to start worrying.

Thanks for the responses.

I should have been more explicit in my post. I know almost NOTHING about computers, laptops, cell phones, etc.

I do know that of the 10-15 websites I regularly visit the CDSOA website is the only one with a "nonsecure" message at the top. Admittedly, I know nothing about this stuff but that seems strange.

Also, what is a "bank website" :?: Mr. Google wants to talk only about financial banking institutions.

What is a "private window" or "incognito window" :?: I tried to ask Mr. Google but I got a headache after reading two paragraphs of explanations. :(

Admittedly, none of this has anything to do with Cape Dory sailboats but I thought I would ask.

Short answer: nothing to worry about here! :D

Long answer: When you browse the web, your computer is communicating with another computer--a server--out on the internet. That communication can be encrypted or unencrypted. Think about it like you're talking to another boat on your VHF. If someone else is tuned to the same channel, they'll hear your conversation. But if you use some kind of secret code that only you and your buddy know, then the interloper won't understand the content of your message, even if they can still hear it.

Same thing with browsing: If the connection between your browser (Firefox, Safari, Chrome) and the server is unencrypted ("Not secure") then someone else on the internet could potentially intercept the data and know what you're posting on the CDSOA message boards. Or they could impersonate the CDSOA website and steal all our varnishing tips. Fortunately, these are not likely to be a serious issues for any of us in the real world.

What could be a problem is if someone watches you log in to your bank account online, steals your username and password, and then uses it to drain your account. That would be bad, and that's a situation where you definitely DO want the connection to be encrypted--i.e. you want to see the little padlock.

Having an encrypted connection never hurts, but it is some added effort and sometimes expense on the part of the web host, so not all websites do it. Keep an eye on the padlock/Not secure notification and make sure that the padlock is there if you're dealing with sensitive information.

Ben:

VERY helpful. Thank you :!:

I just do not remember ever before seeing the red line through the "padlock" and when I put the cursor over it I got really scared when it said "connection is not secure".

It is sad, but I know so very little about computers. I long for the days of a rotary dial telephone and doing math on a piece of paper with a pencil, not a calculator on an cell phone. :(

Firefox is one of the safest. Firefox also has a private mode, if you click on the little burglar mask in the upper right hand corner then open a new window you are then in private browsing.

The later versions of Firefox use that icon to distinguish between "HTTP" and "HTTPS" addresses.

It means the website is not encrypted. Not a big deal if you're on a forum chatting about old boats. It IS a big deal if you're buying something online. You want to look for the lock when making purchases.
