Hello All and thanks for taking the time to read this. I would like to install a tach for my YSM8 Yanmar('81) I have no idea of how to do that so was wondering if anyone could steer me toward a good "how to" article. Also would appreciate hearing about anyone's personal experience who might have completed this project. Thanks in advance!

Hi Bob,
I have the same engine and plan on installing tach made by Tiny Tach. It is rectangular so I will put it in my switch panel below. I will only need to see it to make sure I have correct prop and best RPM for cruising thus don't need it in the cockpit. A bonus is that it records engine hours. It attaches to the fuel line. I never heard of that before but I don't have electrical hook up.

I don't know about the Tiny Tach or your engines. I did replace the Tach on Raven a few years back. It tied into the engine via the alternator. I had already replaced the alternator with a higher capacity unit, so I don't think it matters which engine it goes to. It was pretty simple and the instructions should come with the Tach. The one's for diesel engines tend to have a lower range of RPMs.
I like having a Tach to be able to tell when I am operating in the 80% range of engine RPMs for efficient cruising. I also want to be able to read it from the helm where I control the throttle. Sometimes I will run at lower RPMs if I am motor sailing to conserve fuel. It can also be valuable in diagnosing various problems, Steve.

Was there a tach included with the engine? I had mine restored at a clock/speedometer shop.Saved me as lot of trouble and didn't cost much. They restored it perfectly like new
