isotherm ??
hi michael,,i am thinking about the isotherm system myself. a question. once you install the isotherm thru hull , what happens to the seacock? does it attached above the isotherm thruhull? in other words, where does the open/close part of the seacock come from, is it part of the isotherm "stuff", or do we somehow incorporate the spartan seacock?
thanks

Re: It's spring !!!!!! When are you goin in ?
We are onboard as of this past weekend, but have at least 4 weeks to wait for the ice to disappear..it's still 2 ft. thick, and being driven on by trucks and snowmobiles...although one guy was trying to dig his 4x4 out of the ice near shore Sunday.
We are also installing the Isotherm ASU SP reefer, and that is the job for this weekends fun..the thru-hull.
In answer to Larry Austin, the seacock is supplied with the kit. It's all **very** nice quality gear and machining. So far, it does look good.
Cheers!

isotherm thruhull
Thanks Larry for the info on the isotherm thruhull. I have seen the thruhull on websites, etc just showing the "cooling" part of the thruhull and always wounder if the rest was included.

Re: It's spring !!!!!! When are you goin in ?
Who knows. I was over at the yard today to set some work up that I want the yard to do. Everything and everybody is still shrink wrapped. But on the way home I saw a ray of hope. Crossing a bridge going over Great South Bay I saw a mainsail up on some brave soul's boat. He broke the ice (figuratively speaking) so the rest of us can't be too far behind!J Johnson wrote: Ok.... so spring is here. Let's have a countdown of when we're goin in. Re:Atten: all Capt's. installing Isotherm Reefers!
Larry, Mike, Richard Feffer, and all others interested,
There appears to be at least 4 of us CD30 owners that are (or have already) installing the same reefer units this spring..the Isotherm ASU SP system. I think that we need to keep in touch with each other here, and share our findings and solutions with each other thru this list. It would help those that choose to do this later on, it would be archived so that we can look back on this folly 30 years from now, and laugh-or cry.
How does that sound to you all?
Cheers!

Re: isotherm ??
Hi Larry,
The Spartan seacock is removed and is replaced with the Isotherm seacock (ballvalve). The cooling heat exchanger and seacock are contained in one unit. I believe there are photos on the Isotherm web site. Try great-water.com. The unit is very well engineered and performs beautifully.
I am currently in Md. recovering from surgery. Hope to be back in Ct. by the middle of the month. "Adamarie" is in the water still and just waiting to get the winter cover off. Looking forward to a great season and getting together with you guys!

Re: It's spring !!!!!! When are you goin in ?
I can never understand this excitement. Here in NE Georgia we sail all year. No "hard" water (ice) or need to haul for winter.J Johnson wrote: Ok.... so spring is here. Let's have a countdown of when we're goin in. Especially you northers!!!!!

Re:Atten: all Capt's. installing Isotherm Reefers!
Larry,
I recently acquired a CD 30B (Cutter) with Isotherm unit already installed. My first experience with any kind of onboard refrigeration in a boat. I like the unit and it seems to be efficient, and it is quiet, although it remains to be seen how demanding (amps) it will be when cruising. (My hope is that it will draw no more than between 40 and 50 amps/day). I do not yet have any way to recharge batteries when on the hook except engine. Eventually will get a solar panel. I have three group 31's (AGM) in parallel as a house bank.( a 4th gp 31 is my starter bank). Two batteries in each locker. Of course, replacing the amps as they are used is the issue.
The previous owner used a gen-set instead of increasing battery capacity. However, a gen-set creates its own problems (in addition to cost). Where do you keep it when you are not using it, and when you start it up in a nice quiet anchorage, you are liable to be sunk by your neighbors who want to maintain the "quiet" part.
MOst important is the Shur-Flo pump. Mine pumps sea-water, which is pretty dirty in the ICW. The strainers MUST be cleaned regularly. I reccommend weekly. (It will probably be less of a problem in the Bahamas). Also, check your in-line zinc regularly.
While I do love a cold beer, I'm beginning to have a lot of respect for the ideas of Lyn and Larry Pardey. Between the refrigeration unit and the batteries needed to support it, there isn't much space left in my cockpit lockers. Since I have a quarter-berth, the starbord locker is pretty small in the first place, and was filled with a hotwater tank. The hotwater tank was worn out, so I decided to remove it (a very demanding effort) and not replace it, thereby creating a convenient platform for two more batteries (but not much else). I don't know about the Great Lakes, but in the waters of South Florida and the Bahamas, hot water is not an essential item. And there are other, easy ways to provide it.
I'll be looking forward to reading about your experience.
Good sailing to all.
Will
