CD27 - standing rigging replacement

Post by csoule13 »

Next spring, my CD27 will get shipped from the Annapolis area to Chattanooga. Since the mast needs to come down for this, and the rigging is of an unknown age(and the closed turckbuckles are finicky at best) seems a good time to replace the wire and turnbuckles. At the boat show, one of the companies on hand gave a rough estimate of $3000-$3500, and i believe that assumed that I would be doing most of the work. I haven't dug into the topic, but that seems a bit more than chatter around the marina would lead me to believe.

With the usual caveats about local labor costs, what's everyone's general sense of this project's costs?

Thx,
Chris

Chris, in 2006 I used North Sails in Hampton to replace my 25D's standing rigging.
All tolled, bill was approx $690.... I loaned them all the old rigging to be duplicated (w/instrux to 'shorten' shrouds just a bit to account for 24 years of stretch).
Old rigging was returned along w/New rigging. This was for standing wire rigging only. I re-used the old turnbuckles, so that kept the cost down, and attached all rigging myself..... It's not hard-- just Clevis Pins and CotterPins. Tuning was a learning process, but informative.

Your original prospective quotes sound a little high. I'd search around a bit before biting.

Very happy w/their service. They might be worth a phone call for a quote.

Thx RC. A guy in my marina had new wire and turnbuckles, and I want to say he got it done for around 1200-1500. We'll see how it goes.

RC's approach is correct. Might consider getting a quote from Rigging Only in Fairhaven, MA, our local expert rigger - well known to folks on this Board. I'd advise getting new TBs etc. All that stuff likely to be original, but up to you. Installation is not hard and tuning is a good experience, also not hard.

I think $1200-1500 is much closer, maybe even high, for the size of your boat. I've always used Sta-lock terminals and done all the labor myself and it's a very manageable project.

Well... since you are far from Pensacola, FL., this warning is a moot point; but, I CANNOT recommend Zern Rigging! They charged me about twice what it should have been, did a lousy job (very poorly balanced adjustment space) and in less than 6 months the "new stainless" turnbuckles started showing rust. It appears the stainless hardware is from China, gawd only knows where the cables are from.
Sadly enough, I went with them because they supposedly were known for great rigging; apparently that was only for "race boats" and they didn't care about cruisers.

Can't say what it costs as it was already done when I bought my CD25 but take a look at going with Dyneema over turnbuckles. It's very strong and said to last 10 years. Adjusting and tuning takes a bit of practice but it's no big deal. There are several good videos on YT talking about how to rig and tune.

The Rigging Loft in Fairhaven MA will also duplicate your rigging if you ship the old ones to them. Also known as "Rigging Only." I have used them several times over the past 20 years and have had nothing but good experiences. They replaced all six shrouds on my CD32 three years ago for about $700. i installed them. (Did not replace backstay or forestay at that time).

Rigging Only is a great outfit to deal with. Danny really knows his stuff.
