HIN doesn't match

HIN doesn't match
We have a CD30 built in 1985. The HIN is clearly legible on the transom and also on the inside of the hull in the port side cockpit locker. The interesting part is the numbers don't quite match. On the transom the 9th character is very clearly the number "0" but in the locker it's very clearly a lower case "c". The original owner's manual that came with the boat also has this as a "c". Is this a common issue? Which HIN should be considered the correct one?

Re: HIN doesn't match
The last 4 characters in a HIN indicate the manufacture date. Two different systems were used. Most often the 9th character is an M (for manufactured?) followed by two numerals indicating the model year, with the last character as a letter coded to indicate month of manufacture (only Cape Dory knows what month that really is) None of this applies to your boat. The other system starts with a LETTER code followed by three numerals. If the last character of your HIN is a numeral your boat uses this system, and the 9th character must be a letter.

Thank you Steve. Are discrepancies like this very common?
