Those who grew up reading the numerous magazine articles and the books written by Don Street have reason to shed a tear over the loss of a 114 year old engineless classic.

Don Street had sold Iolaire and the new owner put her on the rocks. I'm certain the loss still hurts.

What a heart breaker. I grew up on Don Street’s books and articles. I have both version of The Ocean Sailing Yacht on my shelf as well as Seawise. In fact the book on the left below is Volume I OSY I got when I was 16 years old. I met him once in Soaper’s Hole, BVI in 1997. Couldn’t have been nicer.

Unplanned gyb. So dangerous. We never sail past close hauled without the preventer rigged. Local guy killed a few months ago when he got hit in the head during unplanned gyb. I always tell people the “boom is a killer.” Be safe folks.

He always wrote very useful articles and books. I’ve read my copies numerous times throughout the years. In fact Vol. 2 is on Orion at the moment.

Less than half of my sailing books. Always been a big reader......over the years I’ve managed to get first editions and autographed copies of some of my favorite authors. I find it hard to stay out of the used book stores in the winter, although there are only a select few that have books on sailing in any numbers.

Yeah, pretty much the same story here. I don’t have many autographs or first editions, though I have a few. I’m looking for info and perspective. My books are working books. I try to take care of them but they have traveled a lot over the years either in military moves or in the bottom of a seabag or rucksack during deployment. They are filled with margin notes. So not so valuable to a collector but they are priceless to me.

My sailing library is just a smart part of our bigger library. We must have a couple thousand books in all. I love to read. I always find a way to make time. Usually at night. Even if only for a few minutes. It’s amazing what you can read if you just dedicate a little time each day. So much to learn—so little time.

Back to the importance of a preventer. Gayle and I were sailing down the Neuse River this past Monday to take the Far Reach to the boatyard for her haulout. The water was flat as it had been dead calm 90 min earlier. The wind was light, maybe 8-10 knots, so we were motoring with the outboard making about 5 kts. We had the full main up and were running downwind on starboard tack. We were standing together on top of the starboard cockpit locker. She had the tiller raised up and was steering with her left hand. We were smooching and she got a little distracted and we gybed. Even though the relative wind was light the preventer was rigged and thus it was a non issue. If it had not been rigged it would have been seriously ugly. That maneuver is now know on the Far Reach as the “smooch-gybe” and only to be used in special circumstances.
