Cape Cod Tornado and Huge Squall

Post by Bill Goldsmith »

This is really scary. Apparently it rolled in with no warning. They confirmed a tornado and squalls with 80 to 110mph winds. There's a Cape Dory (maybe a 26 or 27) at about 0:45 that seems to be riding it out well. Hope everyone is OK!!

Oh my goodness. Glad he was ok. Sounds like a bunch of boats sunk and others broke free of their moorings. That’s one of the things I don’t like about moorings. There are too many people that don’t really put much thought into how they are secured to the pendant, don’t use chafe guards, don’t maintain the moorings etc. On the other hand, moorings can be very effective if properly sized and maintained by thoughtful competent owners. Still, 80 kts is a lot of wind under any circumstances.

For some reason the video which was posted won’t play on my device but I believe this is the same one.

Yep, same footage. This just happened yesterday, I hope we’ll hear more soon about how everyone fared.

Hi All,

MOONDANCE survived with no damage. It sounded like a freight train when it went over my house but fortunately it did not touch down in my area of Osterville. The national weather service confirmed that three actually touched down.

Hope everyone else survived as well.

PS

four small (15 foot or less) centerboard sailboats capsized and sat on the bottom in the east bay where MOONDANCE is moored. They have all been surfaced and other then one loosing it's rudder they are all sailing again.
