Any CD22 owners in Maine?

Post by wikakaru »

My wife and I are looking to expand our "fleet" (currently consisting of a Typhoon, a Walker Bay 8, and a tandem kayak) to include a Cape Dory 22. We would like to see for ourselves how the CD22 sails before we plunk down a hunk of cash. Is there anyone who owns a CD22 within a couple hours drive of Rockland, Maine who is willing to take us for a sail?

Thanks in advance!

Wikakaru, unless you absolutely have to have a CD 22 you can expand your search by also considering a 22-foot Typhoon Senior which, as I understand, has the same hull as a Cape Dory 22 but a different cabinhouse and rig (fractional vs. masthead) and without the fancy interior trim of the CD22. The other significant difference is a stern-mounted outboard on the CD22 vs. a lazarette outboard location in the TY Senior (a small number of inboard diesel CD22s were also manufactured but the motor was really shoehorned in there when I looked at one). My TY Senior sails like a dream compared to the (relatively) flat hulled trailer sailors that I owned previously, and rides over the waves rather than banging into them. It also has a very seakindly motion in waves (bow up/down without excessive rolling side-to-side or yawing like in shoal keeled trailer sailors). According to the Specs section of this site, the CD22s were manufactured between 1981-1985, and the TY Seniors between 1985 and 1987. I live near the old factory and my neighbor's father who worked there for many years said that the switchover was to lower the cost of the 22-foot model due to flagging sails caused by the recession in the small boat manufacturing industry at the time (remember the "luxury" tax?) Apparently it was "too little too late" because they only sold 57 TY Seniors vs. 176 CD22s.

Thanks for the reply! I have mixed emotions about the Typhoon Senior. The outboard well is one of them. I kind of thought I would like the "inboard-outboard" because it doesn't ruin the lovely lines of the boat, but I also don't want my outboard stuck down there in the well gathering barnacles all summer long. I like the option that I could either leave the outboard off of the CD22, or leave it on, tilt it up, and keep it barnacle free.

I'm still hoping for someone with a CD22 in Maine to take pity on me and invite me for a sail...

Yes that can be an issue with a lazarette-mounted outboard, but I found the outboard too far back on the CD22 to raise and lower (unless it has an electric tilt) and it is so nice to have it right next to me on my TY Senior. I discussed this issue with my local Yamaha dealer who installed a lot of outboards on Cape Dories over the years since he was next to their local (and #1) delivery dealer and he said there are two solutions: (1) Take the lower unit off and spray the insides and outsides with galvanized antifouling paint before each season or (2) Just remove it after each sail and store it in the cabin between sails. A 6HP is "light" enough to do this (mine came with a 9.9 which was too heavy so I sold it and bought a 6 HP which has plenty of power - the 9.9 went to a fellow Cape Dorian with a CD26 which displaces twice as much as the TY Senior).

Thanks for the tip--I hadn't thought about how difficult it might be to access the transom outboard bracket. I think I have seen photos of CD22s with extensions on the outboard handle to operate the outboard from the cockpit. I will keep that in mind.
