anybody try Elco Electric Motors?

Post by Megunticook »

By far my least favorite aspect of sailing is using the outboard--the noise just ruins the experience for me.

Am thinking about an electric outboard. In my research I came across an outfit I hadn't heard of before, Elco electric propulsion (https://www.elcomotoryachts.com). At first glance looks promising, and I like doing business with American manufacturers.

Anybody have any experience with these folks or their products?

At $2,600.00 for their cheapest offering I’d be inclined to look into a trolling motor, used if possible, unless of course you need rugged reliability based on your intended use of the boat.
I have a Honda 2.3 for my dinghy which I am very fond of. You could buy three of those and a 55 gallon drum of earplugs and still have change left from $2,600.00.
Honestly the Elco outboard looks like a quality piece of hardware. I find it interesting that it’s water cooled and I’m a big fan of brushless motors. It’ll be interesting to learn what your final decision is.

Check out these guys. They were at the Wooden Boat Show in Mystic. I was very impressed with these designs. They run off of any 12V battery and are built like tanks. He had an outboard model as well as inboard mounted designs. Not suitable for a cruising boat, in my opinion, but would be perfect for a day sailer that was kept at a dock with shore power. The best part is that you don't need to buy the manufacter's battery. They were robust and beautify engineered, Steve.
