CD 27 Ice Box

Post by Walter Hobbs »

Hi.

Upon cleaning my new to me CD 27 ice box, there is indication that there may have been a divider across the width of the base and maybe a shelf on horizontal ledge. How was the OEM ice box set up? Is it better to leave it with the wide open space?

Thanx

In our CD30 there’s a shelf above. We have 2x mini-milk crates on the shelf with some extra space between/to the sides.

Here’s a pic:

Thanks for the reply.

Looks nice. Does the shelf side back and forth or is it anchored in one spot? I like the mini milk crates.
Guess I have another project for the list.

Walter, I'll try and get a photo for you of my ice box next time I'm at the boat, a '78 CD27. Given the reality of the type of sailing I do and the known issues with the ice box actually keeping things cold, I just use the space as storage for non-perishable items. Cold things are kept in a dedicated cooler.

There are plenty of suggestions here and elsewhere online on how to improve the design for actual thermal insulation, it just wasn't worth it in the priority list for me.

The shelf is not anchored; you can slide it back and forth and lift up, or remove completely.

Performance wise, it isn’t a Yeti by any stretch. That being said, what we do for multi-day trips staying overnight on the hook is put a block of ice in (as seen in the pic), add a bag of ice (and bury drinks), and freeze gallon jugs of water (which keeps things cold and provides super cold water to drink).

I haven’t made any modifications to the lid, but know folks have done it to improve efficiency.

One of the easiest ice box modifications is R-Foil insulation, available at Home Depot. Basically, it's foil bubble-wrap. It's cheap, you can cut it with scissors, and mend it with R-Foil tape. In less than an hour, you can make a removable liner for your icebox. Take it out, clean it, put it back. Easy-peezy.

Hey Walter ...

This is what we did for Jerezana ...

Moved batteries to below cabin sole - then repurposed the battery shelf in the stbd locker for heating and cooling. The shot into ice box shows the original shelf/divider plus the cold plate of the Isotherm unit we installed. The aft shelf slides to the left - just happened to be slid to the right for the shot. We were just trying to figure out exactly where to mount the plate. The cold plate plumbing was run up thru the new hole you can just see in the upper right of the box - which nicely exits right where we put the compressor on the shelf just aft.

Since I'm on a slip and have A.C. the setup just runs and its insulating (lack of) qualities don't matter much although it would be a good thing to improve that. Right by the plate now is almost like a freezer - ice lasts for 10 days. Beer goes down low in the forward compartment, produce etc on the little shelves. Setup draws 6 amps if d.c. system voltage is over 13 volts. Automatically adjusts to 2 amp draw system voltage is under 13 volts.

cheers (ps are you over in Bullock Cove? I forget)
