Cape Dory 36 transmission ID

Post by scud2012 »

Cape Dory 36 with Perkins 4-108 and Hurth Marine transmission. Name plate missing from transmission. Anyone have a model number and/or gear ratio for this transmission?

Ours was a HBW-150, I'm not 100% sure what the gear ratio was but IIRC it was 1.88 fwd / 1.95 rev. I believe some of the earlier 36's had a HBW-100 rather than the HBW-150. (We replaced the Perkins a few years ago with a Beta 38 and a TMC 60 A down angle transmission)

Below is a link to the Hurth manual. I vaguely remember someone saying you can figure out if it's a 100 or 150 by counting the number of cooling fins.

Bottomscraper - your info helped. Appears mine is a 150 as well. And yes number of cooling fins was key. Do you recall if you had cooling water to your unit? I am hull #37, 1980 Thanks!

No we did not have any type of cooler. I did change the fluid every season. We never had any problems with it.

I guess a cooler might be more important if you use it in warmer climates.
