We had a 25# CQR on our 28; it was a great anchor and plenty of holding power. You know best how much holding power you need, but while the less weight the better, 35# shouldn't be a problem. We also carried a 12# Danforth on the bow rail for when we wanted two out.
Are you sure the 20# is too light?

would that be to much weight on the bowsprit any suggestions

Re: anchor
It doesn't seem to be too much on the bowsprit of a 30, and it sure makes you sleep better.John B wrote: I have a cd28 with a 20lb cqr thinking about changing to a 35lb cqr

Re: anchor
I have a CD30 with a 35lb CQR and the weight on the Bowsprit is no problem at all. Hauling up the anchor and chain by hand is not really a problem either. The added piece of mind while at anchor is well worth a little extra work.

Re: anchor
A note on the 20 lb CQR. I was in hurricane force winds with a 20 lb CQR out & after the blow it took the engine & 2 people to get it up. We didn't move. Bottom was sand & there was a rock wall less than 100 feet down wind.Joe Sankey wrote: John:

Re: anchor
Same here with my CD28. I had a 35 lb Bruce on the bowsprit and handled nicely. I even had 80 ft of chain in the locker.

Re: anchor
I agree... the weight's not a problem. We carry a Danforth 22 with 30 ft of 3/8" chain and a CQR 15 lunch hook.
Stand on the bow... that adds about 175# and hardly changes the waterline. <g>

Re: anchor
That's a big anchor! We used a 15# CQR as our principal anchor for several years of cruising our CD27 on the Chesapeake, in all kinds of weather. On occasions we used a double length of chain (totalling circa 16 feet) but very rarely did we use our storm anchor, a 22# Danforth. We're expecting to use a 25# CQR in the same way on our "new" CD31.

Re: anchor
The rule of thumb by some authorities is one pound of anchor for one foot of boat length. Talking about CQR and Bruce types not Danforth's. IMHO it's better to err in the too heavy direction than in the too light direction.John B wrote: I have a cd28 with a 20lb cqr thinking about changing to a 35lb cqr

That's the setup the former owner of LIQUIDITY used. I'm more comfy using the 22# Danforth as the primary and the 15# CQR as a lunch hook. I don't like leaving the boat alone on the 15# hook.
As for chain, I use 30' on the Danforth, which I consider a *single* length. Eight feet is not enough.
