Some choices were buying a flatbed and welding poppets, buying used, etc. in the end I paid $4K delivered for my CD22 trailer. Like you it travels a few miles each year. It’s in new condition after 5 years and when I sell I’m sure the trailer condition and brand will help it move quickly...
OK, another vote for Triad :!: :D :D

As for Alan Stewart, who posts frequently on this board, everyone who has dealt with Alan and posted on this board has had a very positive experience with Alan. I do not know what his prices are. I assume they are competitive.

Personally, I remain a very big Triad fan. :D :D

Wow, $4k delivered is a great price. Is that the float-off model with the bow post and extension bar? Looks like that would run me about $5400, not including deliver. Well, that was 5 years ago...and I'm sure those aluminum tariffs aren't helping either.

I've been in touch with Triad and Alan, will drop the old trailer off at a local steel fabricator and see what they think about repair viability. Then I'll either have 2 or maybe 3 choices and I can weight expense/benefit.

No question Triad is the Cadillac solution here...question is does it make sense to make that investment given a grand total of 10 miles of travel per year?

On the road in Warren. They will weld on 3 pieces of 3/16 plate and you can paint it. Goal: $300. They are very nice if you use few words and show up when they aren't busy.

might be worth getting it sandblasted before weld and paint if you plan on keeping it.

$4k is for the standard model with 6 poppets. I could always weld on the keel guides in the future if needed. Our club has a “hoist” that usually works ok..

Yes, I spoke with them. Used to deal with them years ago when restoring an old Fisher snowplow, but finally gave up after they kept promising to do stuff but never followed through. But a new guy bought the joint 3 years ago and hopefully has turned it around--he seems like he has the right attitude. I was going to drop it off either there or Rockport Steel, an excellent local outfit.

Update: a local steel fabricator looked at it and so did a local trailer shop.

It's time for a new trailer.

If anybody knows of anything used for sale, please let me know. Boat weighs 3500 lbs., single axle is fine. Thanks.

So I contacted Mike the owner at Triad to see what he needed for a deposit on a new trailer (we had talked earlier in the summer), after several emails and phone calls all I've gotten is promises that he'd send something but no follow through. I guess business must be awfully good if he doesn't need mine...

Anybody have any experience with Load Rite trailers? I have a quote from a local dealer around here for one of those.

In any case need something before the end of October so I can haul out...

Interesting. I dealt with Mike as well. Was very direct, straightforward. Maybe he’s on vacation?

I’d tell him... I’m Ready to give you my credit card. Just say the word...

99% of the load rite trailers I see are for powerboats. Triad has created trailers for a ton of sailboats. At any rate if he’s not being responsive and time is of the essence you have to move on!

Very early in this thread several people have suggested getting in touch with Alan Stewart http://capedory.org/board/memberlist.ph ... ile&u=6075...
I have not dealt with him personally but the reputation he has on this board is not one you would get from poor service!

He's around, I spoke with him twice by phone, the last time he said "can I call you right back" and never did. I told him I was ready to send a deposit and asked how much, he said he needed to put together a sales order and email it to me, but after a couple follow up emails from me he's gone complete dark. Do I call him yet again? I know he's probably very busy, but when you've got a prospective customer with his checkbook out, I just don't get why you would repeatedly blow them off...

Yes, I've been in touch with Alan and he's been on the lookout for something, but so far nothing's come up.

Megunticook I'm in the same place in terms of thinking about buying a Triad trailer and recently received pricing. As you know, they make two different types of trailers: "Lift-Off" and "Float-Off" (even more expensive) and each is available in single and dual axle with various common options. A single axle "Lift-Off" with a few of the options that I'd want would price out at over $5k delivered. I've also seen another company (the name escapes me at the moment) that makes aluminum trailers for Cape Dory sailboats but I'm not sure about that material for a heavy sailboat, although I never intend to launch any new trailer into salt water which would of course start to accelerate the corrosion process.

Last year I paid a little over $600 to store my Typhoon Senior at a local marina - that price includes hauling, power washing, winter storage (boat stand rental included) and spring launch. I anticipate that it will probably be a little more this year.

While it would be a nice luxury to be able to haul my TY Senior home to tinker with it over the off-season if I had a trailer, the practical reality is that it would still cost $300 to have the boat hauled, power washed, the mast de-stepped and placed on the trailer, and another $300 in the spring to reverse the process. So the winter storage is essentially free.

I knew a guy who had a CD-22 and he figured that he was into the boat $20k with all the improvements he did including barrier coating the hull and buying a new Triad trailer and he was only able to get about half that when he sold it. I figure a new Triad trailer would depreciate $1000-$1500 as soon as it is used, so depreciation would need to be included in the calculation too. So unless something changes and my local marina starts charging a lot more, I don't think that I can justify spending over $5000 for what is essentially a convenience. Of course, if I ever win "the big one" my calculus may change :D

I hear you. I figure in the long term the trailer is the cheaper option for me. Sounds like your marina is giving you a pretty good deal so maybe the calculus is different for you. Here it would cost me $2000-3000 every year if I let the local yard do it, or else I'd have to invest in boatstands and pay about $800 each year for launch/haul. Either way, it wouldn't be long until I've paid what the new trailer would cost. I plan to keep the boat at least another 5-6 years, probably longer.

It is kind of nuts though--I got the boat and trailer in 2013 for $6K, and now I'm going to spend almost that much again on a new trailer?

You're right, it's not at all a given that I'll get that money back when it comes time to sell the boat. Seems like used sailboats are a dime a dozen these days and I'm just not seeing young people or families getting interested in sailing anymore.

If I had a local yard that offered to do launch/store/haul for $600, I'd probably go that route too.

There's a CD22 a couple towns away sitting on an older Triad trailer that's for sale, but of course they come as a package and I certainly don't need another boat! Be nice if something like that worked out, though...I'd be fine with an old trailer.
