Steering gear is soon to be a non problem for me. I am deep sizing the wheel system and going to a tiller. Much simpler. The one thing that I worry about is the dripless gland? On the drive shaft. If that fails, other than stuffing tee shirts and towels down there to slow the leak, you need to get to a haulout before the boat sinks. I am going back to the old style packing gland.
My thru hulls are the original spartan bronze, seem to be in good shape and all turn and close well. Yearly regrease is good.

Maybe going off topic. Someday when I pull my rudder I want to put a packing gland Now there is none. I think because the tube is so high above the water line They didn't think it was necessary. But I'm getting plenty that splashes up there. That is why my bracket was so rusty

That was one of the first changes I made to KAYLA after buying her the first time! The drip-less seal was over 10 years old and do for a boot replacement. Instead, I was able to get a Spartan packing gland from a friend who was doing just the opposite change on his CD25D...
