The red boot stripe on my CD27 is dull and chipped. It looks like who knows what type of paint was applied over the original. Less of a concern is that the line of the bottom paint has crept up over the years until it took over the lower lip of the stripe.
My first idea was to sand with 80 grit to knock the stripe back a bit, and then two coats of red bottom paint. One of the guys at the WM at my marina who has provided excellent advice over the years made a convincing argument as to why bottom paint would be a poor choice. He recommended Interlux Brightside.
My question to the group - I assume many of you have tackled this previously. If going with the Interlux, the can says to sand w/ 220 grit, wipe with solve, and roll and tip on two coats. Given the unknown paint that is on there now, would that still stand? Is there a better way to approach this?
Thx,
Chris

Not the only, or necessarily the best, solution but this is what I chose to do. The paint which was applied was Awlgrip Awlcraft, which I had sprayed, but it is actually very easy to apply with a brush or by rolling and tipping.

Re: Repainting boot stripe
I used red bright side and have been very happy with it. Your plans sound fine...perhaps two coats. Excellant advise about not using bottom paint!

I can confirm that those mesh sanding discs used for drywall, at 80 grit, make exceptionally short work of very old whatever the hell the old boot stripe was. Ditto the crusty top line bottom paint that never actuall sees the water. Highly recommend.
Going to do a coat of pre-kote and see where that gets me. Maybe a 2nd, and then one or two coats of the red brightside, depending on weather and splash date.
