Re: Opening port gasket replacement
I could see that perhaps on the interior of the boat but on the outside? Aren't the portlights "canted" inward a bit at the top? They aren't perfectly vertical are they?I am assuming that the silicon reacted with the gasket material and it "oozed" out onto the deck.

Re: Opening port gasket replacement
I use a little silicon spray on a rag and then rub it on the gaskets. So far no leaks but I am assuming these things are 30 years old and it is only a matter of time. Even If I don't replace them right away it would be good to have the proper material at hand if they ever should start to leak.
So Jim, if you decide to order the material I am willing to buy some of the excess and help install it on your boat so I gain some experience. You just can't go wrong with an offer like that, Steve.

Re: Opening port gasket replacement
has anybody used the Ultra-Weather-Resistant EPDM Foam TUBE instead of the Ultra-Weather-Resistant EPDM CORD ?
price is cheaper but most important is sold in 6 ft length instead of 100'?
Tube will be softer I guess.
Actually was thinking to use it on the hatch that seems to be the same diameter
thanks

If you are just doing one Bomar hatch you can buy their gasket by the foot. It has a peel and stick adhesive so there’s no mess.Martha Lei wrote:has anybody used the Ultra-Weather-Resistant EPDM Foam TUBE instead of the Ultra-Weather-Resistant EPDM CORD ?

I don’t think the tube would provide the necessary durometer reading.

Re: Opening port gasket replacement
Thanks for posting this topic Jim.
Realization's forward starboard ports (over the v-berth) sprung a leak during our 2018 summer cruise. There's nothing worse than a drip right over your face. We fixed it temporarily with the addition of a couple of washers but we'll need to replace that gasket this Spring.

Re: Opening port gasket replacement
I purchased a 100-foot roll of gasket material from McMaster-Carr quite a while ago. After replacing all six gaskets on my port lights, I have sent some to various boat owners. I have now almost run out. (NOTE: For those attending the Northeast Fleet's Annual Meeting on Jan 19, I will be giving away the remnant of that roll.)
The label on this roll says:
RP0235 Rev.
CORD .500 59150 100 ft reel
I think that's the part number.
Hope this helps,
--Joe
