Proper Protocol for Renaming a Sailing Vessel

Post by MHBsailor »

Here's a good topic for a cold (at least for me here in the Northeast) early winter's evening. After considerable thought, I have decided that I would like to rename my newly acquired CD Typhoon Senior. Not having any previous experience in this practice, I'm wondering what an acceptable ritual would be so that i don't offend Neptune? For that matter, do I need to perform a separate ritual so as not offend Poseidon? Are there any other nautical gods that I should also be concerned about? Looking forward to the answers on this one :D
Thanks! JD

This website by John Vigor is the unofficial bible for sailboat naming, "denaming", etc.

John used to post on this board when he owned a Cape Dory 27. He has not posted in quite a while. A loss for this board in my opinion.

Two schools of thought:

Remove all evidence of the old name, or

Retain the old name, in some secret place on board.

Getting this wrong is not a good thing!

Good luck.

One of my all-time favorites for naming a boat is Nauti Buoy.

Naut.

Here are some other contenders.
