Advice needed

Post by Nebe »

It has just come to my attention that an old friends former boat (not a Cape Dory ) has just come up for sale at an astoundingly low price.. and I’m tempted as it’s 31 ft vs my CD 27.

Is it insane to overlap boat ownership?? My logic is to keep the new one on the hard until I can sell my current CD27.

Talk me out of this.... :)

As someone who has two sailboats and has been trying to sell our CD27 for over a year, now asking a low $16,000 or b.o. I have only had two nibbles, one tire kicker, and no offers. Storage costs are using up valuable boat dollars that I'd rather put into our new to us boat. Just because you would no longer be using your 27 does not mean that maintenance cost come to an end, spiders and falling leaves mean that the boat still has to be washed once a month, even though it has a custom fitted winter cover. We now have a spare bedroom at home that is housing V-berth cushions, cabin and cockpit cushions, and everything else that was on the boat. That being said, we had eight wonderful years on our CD27 and now as aging boomers we can relax on our Nonsuch that is almost too easy to sail ( I do miss a tiller). So think real hard about it. Can you accept having double boat costs for a year or two until the 27 sells? Is the Admiral okay with the idea? Hmmmm....

We agree with Tim that it can take a long time to sell a boat. Maybe consider the storage and other costs when you set the price. If the price is very low, it will probably sell. Instead of $16,000, why not $12,000? It seems like a giveaway, but it may move the boat.

We have owned a 31 for 5 years and love it. It's a lot wider and we love the large aft head for storing wet foulies and keeping our heads away from that head while sleeping. Great design and there are only 86 (plus or minus) of them out there. They can sell for mid-30s to high 50s or more for one in top condition.

Best of luck

It seems hard to believe, we started at $21,000. New sails, Garhaeur Rigid vang and traveler, Tidesmarine sailtrack, and more, but right now we would sell it for $12,000 to someone on this board. Other wise the posted price is $16, 000 obo.

Had two CD on the Chesapeake Bay....just didn’t work despite one being in the Middle Bay and the other in the Northern. 28 was on the hard for 3 years. Put the 30 in Key West this Spring and just finished recommissioned the 28 and putting her back in the Bay.

Bottom line is having two sailboats is like having two wives...exhausting!

wow.. thats dedication! I don't think i can do that. It makes sense though if you split your year between the 2 places.
