330 Mast
330 Mast
I have been considering moving up from my CD31 to a CD330. I found one that I like but she has a sleeved mast (just above the spreaders). I've never seen that on a Cape Dory before. Does anyone know if this could have been an original design for some 330's or is it more likely a repair?
Thanks
Thanks

Re: 330 Mast
I don't have a 330, so can't tell you if that splice was original, but I wouldn't worry about it. Most larger masts are spliced because

Re: 330 Mast
There’s one for sale in the town next to me so I went for a look out of curiosity. There is no sleeve in the mast on this one. I’m inclined to believe it is original to the boat by it’s weathered appearance.

Re: 330 Mast
Possibly from storm damage repair? If done properly it should not be an issue, other than just a bit more weight aloft.distand wrote:I have been considering moving up from my CD31 to a CD330. So, get a survey for peace of mind, if you're really interested the boat.

Re: 330 Mast
I'm a bit curious about the economics of repairing a broken mast (a bit off the subject I know). It seems there would be a loss of at
least a foot or two when it's broken, meaning a new mast section of the right length would have to be found (and purchased), trimmed and grafted on.
Wouldn't it be less expensive to just buy a new mast figuring in the labor of sleeving and all? - Jean

Re: 330 Mast
All depends on the damage... masts don't usually "break into pieces" - just get a nasty bend... A proper repair may need to include a short collar around the insert if the "bend" is so bad they have to cut a section out. IMHO a repair would be far cheaper than a full replacement, unless of course, you could find a replacement at a salvage yard.

Re: 330 Mast
Hi I'm new to all this technology websites and all but saw your posts about masts and would like to contact Jim Walsh or anyone who can help find a mast for a cape dory 28 somewhere in the northeast. Many thanks.

Jeff, you could try MassMarineParts in Quincy, Ma. - a salvage yard. There's another salvage yard in
Quincy, also, I think. - Jean
