Squeaky Prop Shaft

Post by jneely »

While under our CD27 today I gave the prop a spin. For the first time ever I heard a distinct squeak. We have a water lubricated stern tube and it is my hope that the squeaking is caused by things drying out. I do not see any way to lubricate the shaft. Any comments?

The cutlass bearing is rubber. If it is dry, it might squeak. The important thing is that there is no slop when you push it back and forth. Once it is in the water it should be fine, Steve.

Thanks, Steve. That is sort of what I thought. There is no slop in the shaft so I am optimistic.

Yanmar SB8. Only squeaks when I spin the prop while on the hard.

That explains it! Ya gotta have water in the cutlass bearing...

Thanks for all replies. The boat goes in tomorrow. That should solve the problem.
