Squeaky Prop Shaft

Squeaky Prop Shaft
While under our CD27 today I gave the prop a spin. For the first time ever I heard a distinct squeak. We have a water lubricated stern tube and it is my hope that the squeaking is caused by things drying out. I do not see any way to lubricate the shaft. Any comments?

Re: Squeaky Prop Shaft
The cutlass bearing is rubber. If it is dry, it might squeak. The important thing is that there is no slop when you push it back and forth. Once it is in the water it should be fine, Steve.
Re: Squeaky Prop Shaft
Thanks, Steve. That is sort of what I thought. There is no slop in the shaft so I am optimistic.

What engine/tranny do you have? and is this squeak or a squeal depending om RPMs???

Yanmar SB8. Only squeaks when I spin the prop while on the hard.
Re: Squeaky Prop Shaft
That explains it! Ya gotta have water in the cutlass bearing...jneely wrote:Yanmar SB8. Only squeaks when I spin the prop while on the hard.

Thanks for all replies. The boat goes in tomorrow. That should solve the problem.
