Marine Head in CD 25?

Has anyone installed a real marine head in a CD 25? With youngsters coming aboard, I think this would be preferable to a porta potty. But can it be done, should it be done, and at what cost?

I can answer half of your question. My former CD25 came with a Groco marine toilet that discharged into a holding tank under the vee berth. I believe it was original to the boat, although I can't be positive. I'm afraid I can't help you on cost, since it was already there.

My '81 CD25 is fitted that way as well (head/tank in V), and I believe it is the default.

I am sure you can figure something out but I have joined the "composting toilet" club after pulling out the original jabsco head and its' sewage bag from my CD 28 and I would recommend looking into it. I have never used a portapotty so I can't compare but I suspect the "composter" is a lot nicer. It really shouldn't be called a "composting toilet" but a urine separating and poo desiccating toilet as that is really what it does. At its' simplest it is a bucket filled with something like dry peat moss, a crank/mixing paddle, a funnel, a bottle. I am cheap so I built my own but you can buy one for around 500 I think. It really doesn't smell, there isn't any composting going on, the key to the whole thing is diverting the urine into a bottle as once the poop is stirred into the peat moss and dries out it doesn't smell. It isn't legal to pump your sewage overboard for the most part so it seems silly to add a bunch of water to your waste and store it in a tank where it grows bacteria and stinks and you have to pump it out at a pump out. I would really like to hear from someone who has gone from a portapotty to "composting toilet" to know whether it is as big an improvement as I think it should be.

If you want an old Jabsco head and a Y Valve I can send it to you if you pay the shipping, but I suspect it would make more sense to buy a new La Vac or such. Retail shipping probably makes it silly, I'm in the PNW, Portland.

When I googled "Composting Toilet" a got a lot of hits but the C-Head didn't show up in first few pages, typical SEO I suspect. The problem I see with a lot of the designs is that they have proprietary cranks and tanks while the C-Head is basically at it's core a fabricobble from Home Depot with a urine diverter and molded plastic instead of plywood. These are not hitech devices and I don't think there is much to engineer.

I'm sold on the composting toilet, especially since a head has never been installed on my boat and I don't have to remove any old holding tanks etc. Here's another link to a good article on the topic.

Due to space limitations on the CD25 you could build it to suit the space.

The only downside to the "wag bag" method is that the bags cost about $3.00 each. Otherwise a smart solution to the problem.

I added a 9 gallon holding tank against the hull behind the head. 9 gallons doesn't hold much and it takes the four of us one weekend to fill it (if we're staying aboard). the vent and the pump out are both on the port side.

I will likely forget by the time I get on board, but I'll try to post a pic of the setup. It was a weekend project.... a loooong weekend.
